Bioplastics: Pros & Cons
The Pros and Cons of Bioproducts like Bioplastic: Bioproducts are products that are mostly made of biological products, like in this video, avocado pits are turned into plastic, instead of using petroleum to make plastic.
The Pros of Bioplastics:
- Bioplastics do not use petroleum
- Bioplastics break down faster.
- Takes less fossil fuels to create.
- Contain less harmful products.
The Con’s of Bioplastics
- Need to be sorted separately from regular plastics.
- Require special industrial processing to create.
- More expensive.
- Still requires a year to break down, compared to normal petroleum plastics which can take hundreds of years to break down.
The cons surrounding bioplastics are more concerning than I previously realized. First, having to recycle them in different batches than in petrol plastic is a challenge. While it should not be, Americans have demonstrated that we do not sort our recyclables well enough causing issues in recycling plants.
Also, being more expensive is an issue, supply, and demand demands that the products be cost-effective. Otherwise, there is a major roadblock that is over-idealistic if we think any investor will spend more than they have to if they do not think it will affect the bottom line.
